Buying A House At 22

I have so many things I want to say in this blog post. Let’s just start with the obvious…my husband and I bought our first home at the ages of 22! Like what?! Yes, it’s a thing and it’s most definitely possible. I’m here to tell you how we did it!

A Dream

Throughout my husband and I’s relationship, we struggled financially. We went from living with my mother-in-law to a one bedroom apartment, a 500 sq ft studio, to a teeny tiny rental home. It’s been an uphill battle but our goal throughout those hard times remained the same – we wanted to be successful, independent, and happy. Despite our less than perfect living situations, we continued to make our future a priority. We knew what we wanted.

Working Hard

We recently got our big breaks a little over a year ago when we both landed jobs that paid well. Each of us probably interviewed a handful of times every week until we finally found companies worth wild. I’d like to point out too that throughout the whole “finding new jobs” process, we didn’t settle. We were offered positions at companies that were only commissioned based or positions that paid out less than what we knew we were worth. Looking back now, those days taught me important lessons about business and communication that I now value tremendously.

The Military

I should mention we would never be where we are now without my husband’s time in the Army. Since deploying this past April, we’ve had the opportunity to replenish our savings accounts and qualify for the VA loan.

My husband is actually an Army reservist when he’s in Illinois but since his deployment he’s been considered active for the last 10 months. To get the VA loan (at least from my understanding) you must have either 90 days of active duty service or 6 years as a reservist. Deployment turned into a positive real quick after we learned those rules. If the hubs never got deployed, we wouldn’t have been able to purchase until after his reserves contract ended. So confusing I know, stay with me here

Closing In Under 30 Days

Thanks to our amazing, and I mean amazing, home loan officers, attorneys, and realtors we were able to close on our first home in less than a month! If you know anything about the home buying process then you know this is very uncommon. Truthfully, it was not simple. I was taking phone calls, faxing, emailing and signing papers 24/7. If you’re thinking of closing on a house in the amount of time we did, be prepared to be available at any given moment!

In addition to the regular home-buying paperwork we needed to complete, I also had the job of getting these papers to my husband who (as I’m writing this) is still out of the country!

We Stopped Listening To Others

This sounds terrible to type but we stopped listening to the opinions of others in the first week of the process. There was a large amount of individuals who felt the need to weigh in on our finances and decisions. They expected the worst out of us. Word of advice, choose to listen carefully when someone else decides to judge your actions. Ultimately, it’s not, nor will it ever be their place to live in.

I know this post was all over the place! I just wanted to share some of the things I went through personally during this whole thing and thought maybe it would help one of you! If you’ve gone through or are going through this process feel free to leave a comment below sharing your experience! I’d love to hear how your story differs from my own!

Decorating The Tree 2017

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us and you shouldn’t be surprised that I’m putting this post up early! Christmas is my holiday, winter is my season, and decorating the house (any chance I get) is what I’m excellent at! All this holly jolly has made me eager to share what my tree looks like and what theme I decided to go with – sparkles, silvers, and golds!

Here are just a few of my sentimental or unique ornaments I’ve always been fond of throughout the years!

The infamous lucky pickle. If you don’t have one of these on your tree, are you even doing Christmas right?! I’m not sure where this tradition stemmed from but I’ve had a pickle on all of the trees I’ve ever owned. If you’re looking for one, the dollar store typically has them for super inexpensive!

My “to the lodge” ornament is definitely special because it was one of the first ornaments I purchased after my husband and I moved into our first home! We don’t live in a lodge or anything similar for that matter; it just fits our rustic deco style SO well! Pretty sure I picked this guy up from Target for a few bucks!

The hubby is a giant Packers fan so it’s no surprise this is tucked in our tree branches. I can live with a little green and yellow considering the rest of the tree is trimmed to my liking + to be honest, football is growing on me!

I’m positive many of you have at least one of these snowmen on your own tree. Aren’t they just the cutest?!

There’s an abundance of fishing ornaments on the tree. I’m not a fisherman but…the husband is and marriage is all about compromise. Am I right?! Although I had an overwhelming and exact theme this year, I think it’s important to incorporate memories from past Christmas’s.

What’s your favorite thing about the Holidays?! Do you celebrate Christmas or something different?! I wanna know in the comments below what your traditions and favorites are during this fun time of year!

See you in my next post!

First Look: Hearth + Hand With Magnolia At Target

The holidays are coming people whether you’re ready or not. And I don’t know about you but…I’m ready! From what I can remember, I’ve never been this excited for the Christmas season as I am in 2017. I think it’s a mixture of the unavoidable festive home decor and the fact that I’m counting down the days until my husband comes home in January! Either way, I’m embracing it and decorating from the floor to the ceiling!

With all of this holiday talk you’d assume there’d be a point to this post. Well, there is! If you’re familiar with Joanna & Chip Gaines then you’d know they’ve been teasing a collaboration exclusively for Target. Today, November 5th 2017, the collection launched online and in stores!

The couple is well-known for their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper. To give you an idea, the program follows the husband and wife through a complete renovation of someone’s new home. Throughout the demo and decorating process, viewers get to know the Gaines family very well! Both Joanna and Chip are authors, parents, and overall great people from what the television show depicts! They seem to truly know the science behind creating and creating things well.

The first batch of home goods have made their appearance. Here’s a little peek into what’s available as well as some of my favorites!

Those plaid stockings in traditional green, white, and greys would look awesome hung above your fireplace this season.

I heard some comments in my local Target that a lot of the pieces featured in this collection were specific to someone with a “rustic” taste. I couldn’t disagree more with that! I think Joanna and Chip did an excellent job of making these products interchangeable with anyones style of decorating. The whites and blacks, silvers and copper tones can easily fit into any living space.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the Gaines definitely kept this batch of items simple. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining! Check out this scale for the kitchen. Perfect for preparing home-made cookies!

This wreath for your door will bring in all the holiday cheer! For only $19.99 you can spruce up the outside of your home just in time for guests or style the piece indoors hung above lots of family photos!

The last thing I wanted to touch on was the wide variety of gifts available from Hearth & Hand. Messenger bags, water bottles, wallets, luggage tags, a doll house, christmas pajamas, and so much more. There’s gotta be something for that special someone on your list this year.

Are you sold yet?! Have you fallen in love with this brand?! Let me know your thoughts on this Target collab down below. I definitely want to hear if you feel the same as I do!
